Domingo German's perfect game on June 28, 2023, was history-making.
If you're not a baseball fan, the significance of last night's accomplishment may not resonate with you as it does for me. But what this 30-year-old, relatively unknown pitcher from the Dominican Republic did on Wednesday was remarkable.
A perfect game in baseball is when a pitcher, throughout all nine innings, retires every batter without allowing a single opposing player to reach base. No hits, no walks, no base runners.
That's 27 batters faced, 27 outs recorded.
In 147 years, it has only happened 24 times. 24 times!
To put it into more perspective, there have been roughly 25,000 Major League Baseball Games in those 147 years, and a perfect game has happened only .0096% of the time. To take the point even further, a pitcher has a .000983% chance of pitching a perfect game when he takes the mound!
It's beautiful because it's so rare.
