Reynard Custom Homes: A Conversation with Jack Baldwin, Managing Partner

Reynard Custom Homes has carved a niche as a "TRULY CUSTOM" architectural design firm. Jack Baldwin, one of the managing partners at Reynard Custom Homes, shares insights into what makes the company unique, their journey since founding in 2020, and their passion for crafting custom homes that reflect each client's vision.

How did Reynard Custom Homes start?

Jack Baldwin: We started Reynard Custom Homes in 2020 amid the pandemic. The world was shifting to remote work, and people were rethinking how they wanted to live and work at home. We saw this as an opportunity to embrace a remote model. Our lead architect, James Knight, is based in Brisbane, Australia, while I'm in Atlanta, Georgia. Despite the distance, this setup has become one of our strengths. James begins his workday as our clients wrap theirs, creating a nearly 24-hour design cycle. It's been an exciting way to work.

What defines Reynard Custom Homes' approach to custom home building?

Jack Baldwin: When we say "custom," we truly mean it. Many builders might offer some customization, but they typically start from a set of base plans or templates. We don't do that. Each client comes to us with their vision, needs, and budget, and we create a home from scratch based on those "ingredients." We think of it as a collaborative recipe: we bring design expertise and technical skills, while our clients bring their dreams and ideas. It results in something entirely unique for each family.

What has helped Reynard stand out in such a competitive market?

Jack Baldwin: I'd say it's our commitment to making each project a partnership with the client. Our process is incredibly transparent. Clients receive daily updates on the progress of their home during both the design and build phases, which means they can literally watch their home come to life. We use advanced collaborative technology that allows our clients to be hands-on, even if they're not physically on-site. Focusing on clear communication and real-time involvement helps us build lasting relationships with our clients.

Do you focus exclusively on residential projects?

Jack Baldwin: Yes, 100% residential, focusing on single-family homes. We design each home as unique as its family or individual. We aren't just creating houses; we're building homes that serve people's lifestyles and dreams. This focus allows us to devote all our resources to making sure each detail, each room, and each feature feels personal and perfect for the people who will live there.

How does Reynard approach budget considerations with clients?

Jack Baldwin: We've worked on many projects, from homes that start around $400,000 to multi-million dollar estates. For us, it's less about the budget and more about helping clients achieve the most they can within their means. What matters is having a budget that can realistically cover the vision. We love working with clients from all walks of life—those building their first family home, retirees looking to settle down, or individuals planning a pet-friendly oasis. Our job is to help turn those visions into tangible realities, no matter the budget.

Could you share some of the projects you're especially proud of?

Jack Baldwin: We've completed over 50 projects in the past four years, but a few stand out. For example, we did a pair of treehouse-style vacation homes in Cherry Log, Georgia, called "Hidden Lookout" and "Hidden Lake Hideout." They're nestled in the forest, and the design reflects a true escape from the ordinary. We've also been working on a beautiful home in the Smoky Mountains near Gatlinburg. Each project feels like it has its own personality. Another one that comes to mind is a home in Canton, Georgia, built by the clients. It's inspiring to watch clients like Vicki and June take our designs and bring them to life with their own hands. Moments like that remind us why we do what we do.

It sounds like Reynard is building a strong presence across the Southeast. Do you see that continuing?

Jack Baldwin: Definitely. While based in Atlanta, we work throughout the Southeast, from Tennessee and South Carolina to Alabama and Florida. We'll go wherever the project takes us within a reasonable drive. It's been exciting to expand and work in so many beautiful areas, helping families build their dream homes in their dream locations.

What's next for Reynard Custom Homes? Are there any exciting developments on the horizon?

Jack Baldwin: We're excited about the future. We recently celebrated the anniversary of a 2023 award from the Georgia Design Awards for our Cherry Log treehouses, which was a big moment for us. But it's not just about awards. We continue taking on unique projects and look forward to partnering with clients who bring fresh ideas and visions. We're passionate about pushing the boundaries of custom home design and making homes that truly reflect the people who live in them.
